TRK 101 Turkish Language-I
This course explores the prolific, orderly and rich ancient language that is Turkish. Students are expected to comprehend what they listen to and what they read in depth and with subtlety; and to express what they hear, see, think and understand in a planned, effective and rational manner both orally and in writing. Grammar topics are covered in such a manner that the meaning is well grasped thus making the student able to express himself/herself by virtue of observations and comparisons made on text passages. Students gain further information through presenting what they read.
MING 101 English-I
Students take this course after taking a placement test. This course focuses on the four macro skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students actively take part in the course. The content of the course is congruent with the specific subject areas.
MBT 101 Information Technologies-I (ECDL)
In this course students are provided with knowledge on computer hardware and standard application software besides the fundamental concepts of information technology. Information Technology is based on the European Computer Driving License (ECDL) certification curriculum, which is becoming a standard in fundamental computer education throughout the world. After completing the course, learners are expected to be ready to succeed in the 1st stage of ECDL Core certification test and obtain the certificate.
MOD 101 Key skills
The course will provide students with opportunities to develop interpersonal and analytical skills and knowledge both in theory and practice of communication. This course is divided into two modules: Numeracy and LiteracyThe Key Skills (Numeracy) course aims to help students select and apply numerical, graphical and related mathematical skills in appropriate ways. The Number Standards Application encourages students to develop and demonstrate their skills in interpreting information involving numbers, carrying out calculations, interpreting results and presenting findings. The other module, Key Skills (Literacy) aims to improve students’ skills in wide a range of contexts i.e. at work and at college. The course will develop their ability for “working with others,” “improving their own learning” and performance as well as “problem solving.”
MHIR 101 Public Relations
This course aims to help students develop a critical appreciation of the role of public relations in contemporary society and organizations. The course covers the history, principles and practice of public relations. It also examines the various contexts - social, cultural, intellectual and technological - in which practitioners must work, and relates them to the ethical standards of the individual, the profession and society. The course begins by examining the definition of public relations and how it has evolved. It then examines the major principles of PR practice and how they can be applied. It also examines the fields of practice in which PR practitioners work. Various case studies will be used to describe actual PR situations faced by a variety of individuals and organizations.
MHIR 103 Advertising
The purpose of this course is to teach students the fundamental concepts, the process and strategies of advertising. In this unit, topics such as the dimensions of the advertisement; the social, legal and the moral aspects of the advertisement; the advertising industry; marketing and advertising research; marketing and advertising plan; and production of advertisements for printed, electronic and digital media are covered. At the same time, students are given information about integrated marketing communication, direct marketing, sales promotion, institutional advertisement and local and non-commercial advertisements within the scope of the unit.
MHIR 105 Interpersonal Communication
This course aims to examine the ways in which people communicate through verbal and nonverbal symbols, the processes by which the receiver interprets messages, the effects of communication upon relationships, and the environmental and cultural conditions that affect communication. Intrapersonal and interpersonal communication are studied as a means of helping the student improve his/her own skills and to provide a foundation in basic communication theory. The student will practice communication skills that develop and maintain relationships occurring in work, social, and non-public settings. At the end of the course students will be able to decide/determine which communication and writing techniques are better for different occasions.
MHIR 107 Social Psychology
The unit is designed so that students can become familiar with social psychology. The topics of the course are the definitions of, and the research areas of social psychology; the social and cultural dimension of human behaviour; the values, beliefs and attitudes of people and the social behaviours of individuals.
TRK 102 Turkish Language-II
This course covers world and Turkish languages; text analysis; written expressions (paragraph, critical thinking: definition, illustration, comparison, quotation, statistics), types of expressions (explanative, argumentative, narrative, descriptive) writing essays, delivering speech (discussion, debate, telling jokes, narrating events and experiences, etc.); Turkish grammar (syntax, semantics); Turkish spelling and punctuation.
MING 102 English-II
As in MING 101, students are grouped according to their proficiency levels after taking a placement test. The four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing are presented. Students are also assigned with some extra work in English such as searching for English material, doing homework and exercises. Authentic material is used in order to help students to better understand the oral English. Examples are selected from their subject areas. A student centered approached is applied to motivate students to achieve more in English. In this way, students feel themselves more authoritative and they take more responsibility in learning English
MBT Information Technologies-II (ECDL)
Learners are trained in database and presentation application software and also informed about communication methods over the internet and the issues arising in this field in relation with the developments in communication technology. After completing the course, learners are expected to be ready to succeed in the 2nd stage of ECDL Core certification test and obtain the certificate. Information Technology-II course consists of the following modules: Databases (with Microsoft Access), Presentation (with Microsoft PowerPoint) and Information and Communication.
MOD 102 Managing Communication and Information
In this course students are provided with the ability to develop communications skills and to plan their own communication process. It also deals with the effects of decisions made by directors on participants of the organizational community. It also helps to develop better network based on sound principles and stresses the importance of information flow from the directors to other participants. It deals with skills such as problem solving, team work, which are needed in business life.
MHIR 102 Public Relations Management
This course is designed to give students a clear insight into how organizations manage their public relations activities and efforts, and the components of effective public relations such as media relations, community relations, employee relations etc. Students will deal with the related strategic public relations management topics such as public relations practice in different industries, special tactics for public relations and corporate communications, and current issues and topics in public relations and communication. The course also aims to show the students the place of the public relations department in an organization and puts an emphasis on its importance as a management function.
MHIR 104 Advertisement Design
This course aims to enable students to learn the necessary information related to the designing of an advertisement with all its processes. Topics such as the making of an advertisement, creating a concept and making it visual, draft making in press adverts, graphical design elements, visual analysis, and creativity are within the scope of the course.
MPAZ 104 Marketing Communication
The purpose of this course is to systematically give the fundamental information related to all elements of marketing communication from advertisement to sponsorship, from packaging to direct marketing; and to enable students to gain an understanding of an integrated marketing communication. Students are given information about topics such as the scope of marketing communication, the elements of promotion materials and marketing communication tools.
MHIR 106 Mass Communication
This course aims to help students analyze the characteristics of mass media, theories of mass communication and the effects of mass media on society. The course also covers topics such as the social, cultural and political structure of mass communication, mass psychology, consumption society, popular culture, mass culture concepts and mass communication models and formation of mass communication messages.
MHIR 201 Writing and Presentation Techniques in Public Relations and Advertising
This course is designed to help students improve their ability to express their thoughts and feelings efficiently both written and oral. Students are encouraged to think and discuss philosophy, literature, art and culture to improve self expression. Students will develop proficiency in public relations and advertising writing skills. They will study the principles of public relations and advertising writing, mass audiences, and special interest stakeholders etc.
MHIR 203 Public Relations Applications
This course focuses on examining different types of case studies from the private and public sector to help students gain an understanding of the whole purpose of public relations within/for organizations. Students will be provided with theoretical and practical insights so they can improve their work within public relations and public relations management. The course will illustrate the relevance of such knowledge in concrete tasks such as designing messages, handling a crisis as well as strategic management and team building.
MHIR 205 Advertisement Applications
The unit is designed for students to be able to make applications related to this subject based also on previously gained advertising knowledge. Making pre-evaluations after the selection of the institution or the product, product properties, market research, creative studies after the determination of the properties of the target group, scenario application and applied advertisement production are tackled within the scope of the course.
MHIR 207 Media Planning:
The purpose of this course is to teach students concepts aimed at the application in the area of media planning and to present the highlighted elements in the preparation of media planning. Topics such as the fundamental concepts of media planning, general principles of planning, interactive planning, database marketing and media planning, entertainment and information sources are examined within the scope of the course.
ATA 202 Principles of Ataturk and History Reforms – II
The course stresses that the principles of Atatürk are based on the ideals to reach modern nations with Turkish historical and cultural values. Content of Atatürk’s word “Peace at home, peace in the world” policy is explained. The relationship between Ataturk’s reforms and the Turkish nation’s values and their unique features are examined.
MHIR 209 Designing Brands and Corporate Image
This course aims to help students understand that developing the right brand and corporate identity is more than just creating a new logo design or refreshing an old one. The message, positioning and images, all contribute to forming the desired corporate image for companies. Students will also be encouraged to discuss the image of countries and nationalities (especially Turkey and the Turks), brand and publicity strategies and the importance of planning within the context of publicity, communication, marketing and advertising.
MISL 217 Customer Relations Management
The aims of this course are to enable learners to familiarise themselves with the concepts and strategies for developing customer relations and customer service, effectively finding and retaining customers, measuring customer relations, and organisational culture and change.
MHIR 211 Diction:
This course is designed with the purpose of conveying to students the topics of sounds in our written language and their points of origin, accent intonation, speaking speed and voice altitude, inflection of the voice and the lengths of vowels. The unit contains applications based on sample texts. At the same time, topics such as the concepts of diction and public speaking, the correct usage of Turkish, types of speech (informative, persuasive), raising interest, listening, learning methods, grasping, taking notes, selecting a topic, target group analysis, speech title, vocalisation, improvement of vocabulary, etymology, text reading, intonation, breath, word choice, poises, rationalism and naturalness and the manner of quotation are covered with an emphasis on application.
MISL 201 Human Resources Management
This course provides an introduction to the concepts and practices of human resource management. The aim of the course is to provide an understanding of the human resource management role and function within the key areas of resourcing, reward, development and relations. The course also provides a global comparative perspective regarding human resources management policies and applications.
CBUS 219 Business English-I
With collaboration, original material is prepared by the help of department instructors for students to learn and use colloquial English and the jargon in their subject area. Vocabulary learning is emphasized. Some tables, pictures, maps and models are used when necessary. Role play is frequently used in class to help students use the language in a “real” environment. Also, students are given assignments to write reports and present them in English.
MHIR 202 Public Relations Campaigns
This course aims to provide students with an insight into the practice and process of public relations by introducing them to different public relations projects from Turkey and around the world. With that students will gain the sufficient knowledge to manage their own campaigns from creative development to media planning. This also will help them broaden their vision about the profession of public relations.
MHIR 204 Advertisement Campaigns
In this unit, students learn how an advertisement campaign is designed, applied and evaluated in order to reach a specific consumer/customer group by examining these on different sample circumstances and by preparing campaigns themselves personally. Within this scope, students also gain application skills in topics such as market research development, determining targets and strategies and constituting the appropriate use of media.
MHIR 206 Intercorporate Public Relations
In this class, students will acquire knowledge of establishing public relations within a company such as eliminating strict hierarchy, refreshing the company spirit, improving relations with employees, developing loyalty, and the importance of internal communication. At the same time, students will learn the functions and types of internal relations.
MHIR 208 Sponsorship
The aim of this class is to teach the basic concepts and the modern approaches of sponsorship. Students will also learn about sponsorship as a means of communication, sponsorship management, the announcement of sponsorship, the measurement of sponsorship efficiency and the sponsorship contract.
ATA 202 Principles of Ataturk and History Reforms – II

HUK 206 Communication Law and Ethics
The aim of this course is to familiarize students with the regulations of communication. Topics include legal issues in mass media, written and spoken media, advertising, publishing, individual rights in mass media communication etc.
MHIR 210 Public Relations and Advertising on the Net
The course aims to help students understand the scope and tools of online advertising and public relations. The development of the internet in the last few years as a means of one of the major communication channels has forced public relations practitioners/professionals and advertisers to pay special interest to the internet. Topics such as the concept of the new media, the dynamics of the internet, the methods of online advertising and public relations, the language that is used on the net in terms of advertising and public relations, the crucial points that should be considered when designing/organising online campaigns, web sites and banner ads, the examples of interactive applications, choosing the right tools and search engine optimization are covered in this course. Computer programs such as Photoshop and Macromedia Flash will be introduced to the students to give them a technical background.
MHIR 212 Analysis of Advertisement
In this course, ESAP (a special system for analyzing adverts) is used to measure the efficiency of chosen strategies, persuasion and attention in advertising campaigns. The teaching approach is supported with examples as well as video shows.
MHIR 214 Political Communication
This course aims to explore the connection and interaction among topics such as politics, propaganda and the media. The course covers the key theories and basic concepts in the fields of political communication and the role of the media in setting the agenda.
MISL 217 Customer Relations Management
In this course, ‘an idealized customer relations management scenario’ is emphasized by focusing on topics such as developing customer relations and customer service, the ways of gaining and keeping the customer, measurement of customer relations, organisational culture and metamorphosis.
MHIR 216 Public Relations in Civil Society Institutions
The course content is composed of the following topics: the features of democratic society, the importance of civil society institutions, expectations from civil society institutions, activities in civil society institutions, the separation of powers principle and civil society institutions, the process of communication and civil society institutions, political communication and civil society institutions, approaches of civil society institutions to public relations, civil society institutions and target masses, feedback analysis in civil society institutions.
