TRK 101 Turkish Language-I

This course explores the prolific, orderly and rich ancient language that is Turkish. Students are expected to comprehend what they listen to and what they read in depth and with subtlety; and to express what they hear, see, think and understand in a planned, effective and rational manner both orally and in writing. Grammar topics are covered in such a manner that the meaning is well grasped thus making the student able to express himself/herself by virtue of observations and comparisons made on text passages. Students gain further information through presenting what they read.

 

MBT 101 Information Technologies-I (ECDL)

In this course students are provided with knowledge of computer hardware and standard application software besides the fundamental concepts of information technology.  Information Technology is based on the European Computer Driving License (ECDL) certification curriculum, which is becoming a standard in fundamental computer education throughout the world. After completing the course, learners are expected to be ready to succeed in the 1st stage of ECDL Core certification test and to obtain  the certificate.

 

CCC 101 Key Skills

The course will provide students with opportunities to develop interpersonal and analytical skills and knowledge both in the theory and practice of communication. This course is divided into two modules: Numeracy and Literacy. The Key Skills (Numeracy) course aims to help students select and apply numerical, graphic and related mathematical skills in appropriate ways. The Number Standards Application encourages students to develop and demonstrate their skills in interpreting information involving numbers, carrying out calculations, interpreting results and presenting findings. The other module, Key Skills (Literacy) aims to improve students’ skills in wide a range of contexts i.e. at work and at school. The course will develop their abilities of “working with others,” “improving their own learning” and performance as well as “problem solving.”  

 

CTET 101 Comperative Structure Analyses-I 

The aim of this course is to compare and contrast Turkish and English within the framework of translation to understand the influence of one language on the other in terms of grammar and usage. It will provide the necessary basic skills, techniques and strategies involved in two-way translation. The course also deals with basic sentence structure, and a deeper understanding of the language and meaning.

 

CTET 103 English Usage and Style-I  

This course will focus on the reading and writing of different types of texts, placing emphasis on the developing students’ ability to comprehend complicated and sophisticated texts of different types and to recognise and register them

 

CTET 105 Introduction to Translation

This course includes the basic principles of translation, basic structures, syntax and meaning. It helps students to understand the nature of translation.  It also includes the translation process between the two languages, and assists the ability to compare.

 

CTET 107 Reading for Translation

This course deals with various texts in English on several topics, with an emphasis on developing the students’ comprehension skills and vocabulary in order to produce oral and written texts in Turkish with a different rhetoric and register. It also includes reading techniques such as scanning and skimming.

 

TRK 102 Turkish Language-II

This course covers world languages and specifically the Turkish language through  text analysis, written expressions  (the paragraph, critical thinking: definition, illustration, comparison, quotation, statistics), types of expressions (explanative, argumentative, narrative, descriptive), writing essays, delivering speeches (discussion, debate, telling jokes, narrating events and experiences, etc.),Turkish grammar (syntax, semantics), Turkish spelling and punctuation.

 

 

CIT  Information Technologies-II (ECDL)

Learners are trained in database and presentation application software and also informed about communication methods over the internet and the issues arising in this field in relation to the developments in communication technology. After completing the course, learners are expected to be ready to succeed in the 2nd stage of ECDL core certification test and obtain the certificate.  Information Technology-II course consists of the following modules: Databases (with Microsoft Access), Presentation (with Microsoft PowerPoint) and Information and Communication.

 

CCC 102  Managing Communication and Information

In this course students are provided with the ability to develop communications skills and to plan their own communication process. It also deals with the effects of decisions made by directors on participants of the organization community.  It also helps to develop better network based on sound principles and stresses the importance of information flow from the directors to other participants. It deals with skills such as problem solving and team work, which are needed in business life.

 

CTET 102 Comparative Structure Analyses-II 

As a continuation of the first term, the aim of this course is to compare and contrast Turkish and English within the framework of translation in order to understand the influence of one language on the other in terms of grammar and usage. CTET 104 English Usage and Style-II

CTET 106 Written Translation 

The aim of this course is to familiarise students with the cultural and social nature of translation. Students are exposed to a variety of texts in order to raise their awareness of the textual norms and constraints operating in English and Turkish, and gradually guided into translation from English into Turkish so as to enable them to acquire translation competence.

 

CTET 108  Discourse Analysis 

The aim of this course is to teach the basic concept of semantics, the fundamental movements of philosophy and psychology, and discourse theory. Students will study various texts of social science and literature.

 

CTET 201 Consecutive Translation-I 

This course aims at enabling students to acquire mastery in sight translation and consecutive translation. With this view, students are introduced to the techniques of effective listening, note-taking and memory development. They also learn how to deal with stage fright and how to get prepared for a conference. After these preparations are completed, students practice sight translation and consecutive translation through the use of a manuscript of assorted speeches and oral presentations on a wide variety of topics.

 

CTET 203  Business Translation 

The aim of this course is to enable students to acquire the written translation knowledge and skills required in the fields of business and tourism. It includes the reading and translation of a wide variety of business letters; (i.e. enquiry, order, complaint, letter of application) and texts related to topics on business (i.e. foreign trade, insurance, customs and procedures, bills of loading). The course aims at raising students’ awareness and understanding of the terminology in the field of tourism and hotel management and focuses on practice in the translation of materials such as tourism geography, tourism marketing, and hospitality.

 

CTET 205 Subtitling Translation 

The aim of this course is to provide students with the essential background knowledge in
 the area of audio-visual translation and with the necessary techniques of subtitle translation and to enable students to achieve competence in subtitle translation. A variety of films such as feature films and documentaries are translated for the improvement of their competence to perform sound translations.

 

CTET 207 Social Text Translation 

This course aims at developing students’ awareness and understanding of the terminology in the field of social sciences. It will also cover the translation of social topics, international politics, international organizations, history, music, art, theatre etc.

 

ATA 201 Principles of Ataturk and History Reforms -I

This course deals with the reform movements in the last period of the Ottoman Empire and the reasons for their failure as well as  the effects of those movements. It uses  examples of events, and examines the ideologies put forward to save the country in Ottoman times. Among those ideologies, the effect of Turkish movement in the Independence War is considered. 

 

 

CTET 209 Societies and Cultures 

This course aims to familiarise students with the language of social sciences through comparing and contrasting attitudes, beliefs, traditions and ways of behaving related to family, class and status, education, health and welfare, religions, economy, government, and law and order. This course  also examines the concept of culture and evaluates the effect of external influences on national cultures and behaviours.

 

CTET 211 Theories and Techniques of Translation

The aim of this course is to familiarise students with models and theories developed by the most influential theorists in the field of translation studies. It also covers theories and models developed recently by translation scholars and schools, the basic and common concepts and terms of translation studies, the political and social aspects of translation and the role of  the translator and the translation.

 

 CTET 213 Medical Translation

This course aims to familiarise students with medical terminology and  the translation of medical text medical magazines, articles, and new treatment methods etc.

 

CITM 201 EU-Turkey Relations 

The objective of this course is to provide a comprehensive understanding for students about the political and economic development of the EU in relation to Turkey. In this course, EU – Turkey relations since 1963 would be reviewed. In this context, the Ankara Agreement, the Additional Protocol and the decision of the Customs Union would be elaborated on. Additionally, Turkey’s harmonization with the common policies and reforms which have been and will be made on the way to  Turkey’s full membership of  the EU would be discussed.

CPRA 101 Public Relations

This course aims to help students develop a critical appreciation of the role of public relations in contemporary society and organizations. The course covers the history, principles and practice of public relations. It also examines the various contexts - social, cultural, intellectual and technological - in  which practitioners must work, and relates them to the ethical standards of the individual, the profession and society. The course begins by examining the definition of public relations and how it has evolved. It then examines the major principles of PR practice and how they can be applied. It also examines the fields of practice in which PR practitioners work. Various case studies will be used to describe actual PR situations faced by a variety of individuals and organizations.

 

CBUS 205 Business Ethics

The aim of this unit is to develop an ethical dimension in consideration of business objectives and responsibilities and to develop a broader view of the management process. This will be achieved by the investigation of narrow and broad business ethics issues and by making explicit links to related units.

 

CTET 202 Consecutive Translation-II

CTET 204 Interpretation Skills 

This course aims at combining first-rate aural comprehension with the ability to take notes and to develop an ability to translate the gist of what is heard. The focus will be on the correct interpretation of discourse, register, intonation and specific terminology.

 

CTET 206 Translation Support Systems

The aim of this course is to familiarise students with information technology designed for translation. One or some of the new techonological support sytems are presented in class in order to make translation work easier.

 

CTET 208 Literary Translation 

This course aims at familiarising students’ with different literary genres and it consists of written translation from English into Turkish of literary texts including poems, short stories and plays. It also gives students guidance on how to approach  literary texts with the aim of translation, and the strategies and tools needed to translate literary texts.

 

ATA 202 Principles of Ataturk and History Reforms – II 

IThis stresses that the principles of Atatürk are based on the ideals to reach modern nations  with Turkish historical and cultural values. The content of Atatürk’s words “Peace at home, peace in the world” policy is explained. The relationship between Ataturk’s reforms and the Turkish nation’s values with their unique features are examined.

 

CTET 210 Written Media Translation 

This course will focus on the translation of news items, articles, editorials, cartoons and film, the press, plays, concerts, book and sports reviews. The translation of these materials will be from English into Turkish and Turkish into English.

 

CTET 212 Semiotics 

This course aims to encourage students in the human quest for meaning. The field of translation, which is all about the transfer of meaning, can benefit from the concepts of semiotics in analyzing and decoding communicative significations. This course helps translation students to acquire an awareness about the subtle meanings of linguistic and non-linguistic signs in general and also help them to decode and encode social, cultural and linguistic meanings in particular.

 

CTET 214 Technical Translation 

The aim of this course is to develop students’ practical knowledge and understanding of different areas of science and technology and to equip them with the terminology used in different areas for recognition and production and to enable them to translate by using the appropriate structure, terminology, register and tone. It covers such topics as agriculture, the environment, geology,and construction.

 

CTET 216 Simultaneos Interpretation 

This course aims at enabling students to acquire competence in sight translation and familiarises students with the rules, techniques and coping tactics in simultaneous interpreting. Students will also practise production skills from English into Turkish. It also familiarises students with the techniques, strategies and coping tactics for sight translation.

 

CBUS 212 Small Business Enterprise

The unit is primarily designed for learners who are interested in small business enterprises and looks at the development and expansion of such businesses. It draws together many of the topics covered in other units and allows learners to practise the skills required in a small business. The course also outlines a roadmap for analysing the goals and plans that small businesses need to develop in order to implement the necessary changes that they live through.

 

CTET 218 Legal Translation

This course covers every kind of legal text and its translation. The topics include: court verdicts, notary papers, contracts, petitions, etc. It aims at familiarizing students with legal procedures and terminology.
